Vegeta
Goku's enemy at first, later rival. Born on Planet Vegeta as a prince, this proud Saiya-jin is classified as an elite warrior. Even though Vegeta is evil at heart, he is perhaps one of the most strong-willed characters in the Dragonball series. Just like Goku, he is constantly striving to be better, but different purposes drive Vegeta's spirit. Goku fought to defend the lives of others and to challenge his limitations, while Vegeta fought to satisfy his bloodthirsty appetite and die hard pride, which is unwilling to accept defeat. This gradually changes throughout the series. The primary driver of his will is Son Goku. Vegeta's defeat in his first encounter with Goku and his unwillingness to accept Goku being more powerful had constantly fuelled his strong will to continue to train himself. After seeing Goku turn into Super Saiya-jin and defeating Freeza, he grew even more jealous of Goku's achievements and immersed himself into intensive training. After much sweat and frustration, he finally became Super Saiya-jin. He only enjoyed a fleeting moment of pride in destroying Android 20, before being defeated by Android 18. Vegeta first change occurred during Gohan's battle with Cell. Because of his rash decision to attack Cell when he did not have the power to, had caused Gohan arm to be seriously injured when Gohan saved his life. Not only was he not even close to Cell ability or power, but also served as a headache to Gohan. That was the first time Vegeta accepted his incapabilities by making an apology to Gohan. By the time Majin Buu appeared, what used to be a cold hearted Vegeta changed. Right before he proceeded to sacrifice his life in an attempt to destroy Buu, he told Trunks that he cared about him and how he felt bad about giving Trunks much less attention then Trunks deserved. During Goku's final battle with Majin Buu, Vegeta goes through a complete change. He realized that Goku's pure and kind heart gave Goku the power that Vegeta never had. He finally realizes that the good ultimately prevail. In the end, Vegeta relinquishes his evil (or most of it) and stymies his pride when he calls Goku the number one warrior.

Bitter enemies from the very beginning of Dragonball Z, Goku and Vegeta prove to be practically best friends by the end of the series. In Dragonball GT, Vegeta cuts his trademark hair to make it short and all one length and even grows a mustache(later shaved off). Since Goku is trapped in a child's body, Vegeta is actually stronger than Goku for most of DBGT, but Vegeta elects to stay on Earth with his family and guard the planet. Goku and Vegeta are finally, truly equal in power once they both reach Super Saiya-jin level 4, and during DBGT there is an entire episode completely devoted to Vegeta, an honor that no other character in the series is lucky enough to receive. At the very end of DBGT, when Goku has to leave Vegeta is one of the only characters that actually know where Goku is going and what he will do there. Although it is never made obvious, Vegeta eventually becomes and remains one of Goku's closest friends.
